Turf to get a workout at hockey semi-finals

4/09/2008 3:23:00 PM
It’s going to be one huge weekend at the hockey complex with semi-finals to be played over three days in a first for Port Pirie Hockey.

It’s something new brought in this year – turf games for all semi-finals – with the exception of just two U13 junior games.

The turf is going to get a massive workout, from 4.30pm tomorrow until 6.30pm Sunday night when the final whistle will be blown to end the semi’s.

It’s so hard to pick winners this weekend, and so much will depend on who’s in and who’s out.

Usually come finals time, all teams have qualified their best eleven and all of a sudden it’s a whole different ball game.

Take for instance, St Andrews Div 2 men’s side who last week qualified Simon Fuchs by playing him in the Div 3 Rovers team, and so he’s now played six games which is enough to qualify for the Saints against Park Royal Panthers this weekend.

Simon’s presence at fullback for the St Andrews team this weekend could change the whole complex of the game and once again it will feature the Fuchs boys going head-to-head with brother Andy playing in attack for Panthers.

The hockey fans won’t want to miss a minute of the Div 1 games, the first one being at 6.30 on Saturday night between St Andrews and Park Royal Panthers in the women’s premier league.

This game will have some outstanding talent on the park for PR Panthers including the likes of recently selected State U16 schoolgirls talent, Madeleine Jordan, Jess Dunkley, Leah Fuchs, Mae Camporeale, and Noami Zakarias.

St Andrews has finished the minor round season on top of the table and deserve to be favorites going into this game. They will look to the highly talented Brooke Smith, Sharon Brooks, Di Murray, Nicole Burley, and Kim Ramsay to set up a winning score.
